Uli Awakened: In Her Name is a solo exhibition by Dominique Swift exploring womanhood and cultural memory through the Igbo art form of Uli which was traditionally used for body and mural painting.
Imagined as an artist’s naming ceremony (Igu nwa aha), the twelve paintings illustrate a narrative in conversation with Uli, using its visual language to explore an African American woman’s engagement with African ethnic traditions as part of a broader search for belonging.
The exhibition is free and open to the public.
