WE LEARNED OUTSIDE
AN ONGOING PAINTING COLLECTION BY DOMINIQUE SWIFT
Children don’t experience their world as infrastucture.
We Learned Outside is an ongoing painting and pyrography collection by Dominique Swift that looks at the ways children learn outside of formal instruction through play, repetition, observation, and shared space. Drawing from outside games as sites of informal learning, the work considers how rules, awareness, timing, and care for one another are often absorbed without explanation and carried in the body rather than written down. For many children of color, these games can also operate as quiet lessons in how to move through the world safely.
Working on wood allows the pieces to hold a sense of memory, touch, and time. The surface carries marks and accumulation in a way that mirrors how childhood lessons are layered over time instead of learned all at once. Each work exists more as a fragment of a lesson or memory than a direct depiction of a game itself. Together, the collection reflects on how knowledge tied to survival and community is passed down quietly, shaped by environment, and carried with us long after childhood ends.
Each piece in the series is titled with familiar phrases that can function as advice, warning, or affirmation depending on the viewer’s lived experience.
